Featured Gut - August 2010
Brittany Kelly - Halifax, NS
My name is Brittany Kelly and I'm 19 years old. When I was told I had been named Gut of the Month, I felt honoured. I personally do not have Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, and I hadn't even heard of either until I was about 13! At that age, I found out that a friend of mine had Crohn's disease.
I never would have guessed, as she seemed so confident, upbeat and caring, and acted like nothing was wrong! She was the person that got me curious about the illness. Throughout the years I have met a few more people who have Crohn's, which made me realize that inflammatory bowel disease really does affect a lot of people.
I started volunteering for the Heel ‘n' Wheel-a-thon, and love helping out. It is a lot of fun, and also for a good cause. I love to help out my friends, and helping out with the Heel ‘n' Wheel-a-thon makes me feel even better because I know I'm not just helping my friends, but am helping people everywhere.
It’s important to find a cure because this illness is chronic, yet you would never know by looking at a person that they had it. These people are energetic, funny, amazing people. They deserve to have the energetic, fun life they lead without the burden of the disease.
From the dedication and concern I've seen from our generation, it makes me feel confident that we will be the ones to find a cure.
